The journey to reach this hidden treasure involves a combination of adventurous trekking and enduring a winding path through dense forests. However, the effort is entirely worth it once you arrive and witness the captivating beauty of the village.

Embracing Simplicity and Tradition:

Upon entering Wae Rebo, it becomes apparent that this village has retained its traditional charm and way of life over the centuries. The seven cone-shaped houses, called “Mbaru Niang,” stand tall as a testament to the community’s commitment to preserving their cultural heritage. These unique structures are crafted from bamboo and thatch, providing a glimpse into the ingenuity of the Manggarai indigenous group.

During our stay in Wae Rebo, we had the incredible opportunity to participate in the villagers’ daily routine. From waking up with the first rays of sunlight to engaging in communal activities, we truly felt a part of their way of life. Mornings began with the melodious sound of traditional music as the villagers gathered for a collective prayer, expressing their gratitude for the blessings of the day.

The villagers then proceeded to work together on various tasks, such as farming, tending livestock, and handicraft production. Engaging in these activities allowed us to witness firsthand the strong sense of community and cooperation that is deeply ingrained in this culture. The villagers graciously shared their knowledge and techniques, allowing us to participate and contribute to their everyday tasks; such as making coffee!

An Insight into Manggarai Traditions:

One of the most memorable experiences in Wae Rebo was witnessing the villagers’ adherence to age-old traditions. The locals, dressed in their traditional attire, performed mesmerizing dances and showcased their captivating music. These artistic expressions, passed down through generations, reflect the deep-rooted spirituality and their strong connection with nature.

Additionally, we had the opportunity to witness the preparation of traditional cuisine, which was not only a culinary delight but also a significant cultural experience. The locals’ meticulous attention to detail and the use of organic ingredients emphasized the importance of maintaining a harmonious relationship with nature.
